weekend wrap up

We have had a pretty quiet weekend all in all.
Bohdan has had one walk a day. He is eager to go but seems pretty tired out
after the walk.

I have been talking with other people whose dogs have had TPLO and are also in
the process of recouperating. It seems that there are some stretches that I might try to help bohdan with losening up the joint which should enable him to sit and go from a sit to a stand easier.

He has always had a sloppy sit, I am just hoping we can get to a point where it doesn't hurt him to sit or get up from a sit.

catch up

we took a walk around the block on monday night.. bohdan did very well, and went to bed after having an asprin. I decided to make tuesday a true no walk day... so it as very quiet for him.

this morning we went for a walk around the block and it seemed as if he wanted
to go further... I didn't let him. I am thinking the next step is to take two
walks of about the same length in the same day.. so I will take him for a walk around the block again tonight and see how he handles it.

He will have had the entire day to rest I think he will be up for it.

sunday night

The vet called back and said we should probaby be taking only one walk a
day and if that still made him limp to make the walk shorter. I will have to call and
chat with them to see what is the best approach.

I took Bohdan for a walk around the block before bedtime... He enjoyed it.

Around 2am he woke up crying and just lay there crying. This morning when we got up
he seemed to still be in pain and was limping. This is very frustrating. I gave
him 2 asprin with his breakfast. Hopefully he will spend the day sleeping and feel
better when I get home to take him out.

last night

Lastnight Bohdan didn't get a second walk. He was still limping pretty badly.
I just thought it would be too much. I did give him a massage, and some aspirin. Then at 2am before going to sleep, I gave him some homeopathic remedies to help his muslce soreness, I think that is really the only problem right now.

We shall see if we can fit two walks in today or not.

first around the block

Well Bohdan and Shari talked me into go on a walk. I thought we would just
go to the end of the block and back again, but when we reached the end of the
block, Bohdan assured me that he would be able to make it all the way around.

So we started to go around the block. He had to pee on everyones lawn.... a little here a little there...

As exactly the half way point Bohdan started favoring his leg a little more.
But what could we do, we were comitted to walk the rest of the way.

We made it home with Bohdan flopping on one lawn, and to rest. The bread I had in my pocket was a good bribe to get him to keep going.

We got home, and he slept for about 2 hours.

Now he is awake and full of himself.

no walk this morning

Bohdan is limping, hmmm, more just favoring his TPLO leg. He isn't so bad as toe touching, but he does favor it and when he gets up from resting I can see that it bothers him. We are not going to take a walk this morining,
much to his disappointment.

I called the vet and left her a message, I just want to make sure that I am not pushing him too hard.

It keeps getting better

We walked to the end of the block and back again. However this time, Bohdan really wanted to keep on going. He didn't want to turn around and head home. We had a bit of a discussion on the issue, and we walked back on
the opposite side of the street. He had a lot of energy, but was still limping, and
went to sleep shortly after we returned. I am not sure if I should try to add another walk into the schedule yet.

Thursday night

Well we didn't take a walk this morning. I was in too much of a rush for the first day of this new contract. Bohdan got to spend the day alone, this is the first time he has been home alone all day since surgery.

I Gave him access to my room, and the living room and put a gate up across the couch and the front door so he would not be able to get to either when the mailman arrived.

We walked to the far end of the block and back, approximately 10 minutes.
Bohdan fell asleep when we returned home.

Day Two in the park

Again this morning I took Bohdan to the park for a walk. Hoping we would be able to last the full ten minutes. At nine minutes Bohdan had decided that he had, had enough and walked to the car... got home and slept all afternoon.

First Walk

We took our first walk today. It only lasted 7 minutes. We walked in the park near our house and then we came home and slept the entire afternoon.
No walk at night, leg seemed too sore.

8 Week Check

We went to the vet today for Bohdan's 8 week follow up.
It was good news.... The bone is healed and we are able to begin
Physical Therapy.

The plan for carefully building his muslces and allowing his body to adjust to the surgery are as follows:

Week 1- two 10 minute walks/day, no less than three times in the week.
Week 2- two 15 minute walks/day, no less than three times in the week.
Week 3- two 20 minute walks/day no less than three times in the week.
Week 4- Two 30 minute walks/day no less than three times in the week.

Slowly increase the amount of time/distance and the pace of the walk. Leading up to off leash romping around.

It will be great when I can let him outside in the back yard on his own.
