we were driving in los angeles. it was summer, early afternoon, sunny, and warm.. it was along a generic stretch of like sepulveda blvd south of the airport, driving south. we were in my blue nissan pickup. I wasn't driving, my friend was.
we forgot something, so my friend over my objections turned left into a largish construction site. nobody was there so maybe it was a Saturday or a holiday. they were razing a big brick building to make room for something else. we started driving around the center hole counterclockwise. my friend would point the car at a narrow part where there were still bricks and shit piled up and then realize it was too narrow to hold the pickup and swing right to go around. this happened several times. I was nervous and reminded her that the truck is not a 4-wheel drive.
at the back of the property was like some shady passage way that connected it to a park. there were some picnic tables in the passageway? anyways the truck could have been driven through it except it was to a park so vehicles weren't allowed. we parked and called ron skelton (he's in charge of the ops team at my real job) so he and his crew can come join us.
a while bunch of people arrived in a staggered fashion and we did <something that's faded> in the park. I almost want to say it was a scavenger hunt for fun and profit. one of the people was Heather's older brother David but he was leading a much scrappier life than in reality.
someone who showed up was like a coin vendor or money changer. the money changer set up on a picnic table in the passageway, at the end toward the contruction site. a lot of the people already there had coins they brought or just found to trade. a girl showed up with old silver dollars in a bag. I got excited because in my dream I collected such things. she opened the bag and there was this stack of coins, each one the size of a pancake! I slowly sorted throught them. there was an old silver dollar; and an old nickel; a wood penny with a big 1¢ in the middle in faded black stain, and a faded red stain aroudn the whole edge; a couple more silver dollars; and then two more silver dollars.
I asked if I could get the silver dollars. this was fine with everyone. I went through them again to gather them up, and the last two were gone. I was crushingly disappointed. I realized it meant that David had taken them, and he wasn't around. nobody believed me that David could or would take them, but I was certain that his thieving skill was that high, to take them right in front of us. while we were sorting through.
we moved into the park proper to some picnic tables that were in the sun. I guess food was coming. of course David showed up. he sat next to me. to everyone's surprise, I said to him, "David, did you by any change pick up two of those silver dollars?" and he said, kind of sheepishly, yes. I asked, "Can I have them back, please?" and he agreed and pulled them out and gave them back. thus my dissapointment dissipated.
