unexpected swim

I and this tall woman, with curly dark brown hair, were friends and co-workers. I'm not exactly sure what we did for a living. we were supposed to be at work at a certain time, but we were trying to suss out something, perhaps information from a rival company, and thought if we did that being late would be O.K.

the day moved on and it got to be late enough that nothing we did would be O.K. since we hadn't called either and so were hours overdue. my friend wasn't ready and I thought she was. she got on some BART-like transportation train, except the cars were more like trailers on a movie set; they had like places for changing clothes and makeup and la la. my friend realized she had forgot something and got off the train. but she left like a purse or ID behind on the floor. I grabbed it and jumped off the train. it had already started moving so I was surprised I was able to land on my feet.

there's a gap in there where I guess our effort paid off or else someone in the management chain recognized our effort.

we weren't far from the ocean. my friend however hadn't gotten to spend a lot of time there and was unfamiliar with it. as part of a treat rewarding our effot Ellen (the VP from my actual job in real life) came and drove us to the ocean in my Maverick. she was talking to my friend about the ocean and how she was gonna love it. I looked at the water form the distance we were and realized, those waves were big. I said something about it as we topped the last hill before decensing down to the beach.

I was right, the waves were big; the water level was much higher too. the road down the hill went right into the water. Ellen slammed on the brakes but the car ploughed right into the seawater. the brakes and the water meant the car was already skidding and starting to spin before it hydroplaned, then floated off the left side (which was landward) of the risen roadbed. we realized there was nothing under us and things began to gurgle as the car filled with water and started to list and sink. at least the big waves weren't crashing over us. I guess the depth change because of the roadbed must have acted like a breakwater.

the door on the side of the car that was sinking fastest had problems opening and I felt a rush of panic. I mean I was already unhappy at what this meant for my car, but I wanted all of us to get out of it as unscathed as possible. after some yelling and effort, though, we got out and swam back to the road where we could get our feet under us. I'm glad we were able to do that because I never have learned to tread water.

that's about it. pretty scary.
