I went back to sleep without fixing this one in my head, but I still have quite a bit of it:
we were in some town in the front range in Colorado - not Denver or Colorado Springs but maybe south of that. Pueblo maybe? the town name didn't figure in my dream. anyhow it was night and me and my friends were wandering around looking for somewhere to hang out. we were not from there - this would ba a "me and my friends" from LA. the person we were visiting was taking us to like youth hostels and halfway houses. these were all empty. they were not like official state-sponsored things but places where volunteers watch over the teens to prevent everyone form getting in too much trouble.
we got to one and it was not empty but people were hanging out. maybe some folks were on drugs. it didn't matter. there was music, and a TV in one room. most of the lights were off. a lot of people were just laying around the floor talking, it was very mellow. we sorta settled down talking to people too.
there were three people laying on the floor talking. the woman in the middle was on her back watching the ceiling as they were talking. looking at her, I realized, this was Dale from the co-op at UCLA when I lived there! turns out she was pretty active in these kinds of houses, and managed this one. I was pretty excited over this, the person who was taking us around was surprised we knew her, and the rest of the people with me were in various states in between. none of us knew what had happened with her, but only I had actually bothered to try to find out - and fail.
the party started to disperse and that just left me and my friends and Dale. she was shutting off lights and whatnot. I guess nobody actually lived in the space we were in and folks had gone home.
after this we went east out of town a bit. the night was still young, by this time a little after midnight. we were out in a wide grassy area, and there was still a small ridge to the east of us. we were tromping around looking to set up some electronic equipment, I am not clear now what for but some sort of experiment. we got to a part where there was a pond, shaped somewhat like this:

with the bottom part pointed east. we were north of it, and thought this would be a good place to camp.
we started roaming around. even though it was night everything was well-lit and as easy to see as if it was day. that's not to say we had daylight, more like everything had an inner ambient light. Bob Brunwin and I went to climb the ridge east of us. it wasn't terribly tall but the top 4-5 feet were almost vertical, and very narrow; both sides were almost vertical and it came to a fairly narrow edge. it was covered in short grass with no exposed rock. we decided some of our equipment needed to be up there, some on the other side of it. we went back to get the most expensive piece, that resembled an expensive brushed-steel component disc player of some sort.
I fussed that the ridge was too narrow to set it up there, and what happens if it fell into the pond? but Bob grabbed it and up we went, again. we tried to balance it on the top, and down it slid, gaining speed and momentum while we hung from the top and watched, and it bounced and tumbled and landed... right in the middle of the pond. everyone was quite peeved. it was not hard to retreive, at least; it was clearly visible from the surface.
