junior high redux

I was living in a crowded house (flat? loft?) with a bunch of other people. I had a room which I split with another person and they were moving out for whatever reason.

the house had my dog (a big rottweiler) and some small beagle-sized dog. which was mostly white with reddish brown markings and totally totally fat. neither dog could really navigate around the house or down the hall without knocking something over.

we were trying to get me another roommate and this girl Cathi was getting "interviewed" (if that's how you want to characterize the process). she was hanging out and we were watching TV with no lights on and I can't recall if we were drinking or whatnot but that is just a detail. it was cold.

after a while everyone went to bed and I was still talking to Cathi. we were under blankets and watching TV still. we started talking about contacting old classmates and stuff from high school and earlier. I said I wasn't in contact with anyone from before high school except for Anne Marie Puskar, and through her, with her best friend, Cathy.... I had to think really hard. Cathy Fiege. (feeg-ee). then it clicked, that this was the same person.

we laughed about it although it was kind of awkward too, both of us being kind of different from what we were in junior high. Cathi had been the PK for the church affiliated with the school I attended, and turns out she grew up to be more and more active in the church, and her dad relied on her a lot to organish the parish finances and do fund raising and whatnot. and I, of course, was here living in this crowded flat in SF with a fat dog that knocked shit over.

some time passed and then it was day time. I saw Cathi again and her hair was still really curly, but was all silvery white. she was unhappy with it, and said she was going to change it back to blonde. she said she was trying out the coconut color her parents used, and that she decided she didn't like it.

we talked but in my dream I sort of followed the events behind her conversations. Cathi's dad was getting on in years and was going to retire soon. this was a problem for Cathi, whose life (and employment) had been pretty much based on dealing with the parish books and fundraising and whatnot. it was unlikely she would continue to occupy that position when there was a new pastor, and she didn't really know anything else. so she was facing a dilemma. that was part of the reason she was considering moving into the flat instead of staying where she was.
