the idling rich

I dreamed I lived in a big house - you had to walk up a wide grassy
walkway, with stone stairs and grassy landings, to get to it.
Louis lived in one of the houses along the walkway. He had a housemate,
who was sort of junior/new to the whole geek thing.

I had a lot to do and I couldn't sleep. it was 4 in the morning;
I decided I would get up and go to this local but isolated watering
hole/pond/swimming place, becuase it would be secluded and peaceful
and I could study there for a class I was taking.

I went outside and it was blazing sunlight. the sun was low but not
like early or late but more like this was at a high latitude. I had
my book and a towel and was wearing a bathing suit and a robe. I walked
down the walkway towards where I was going; and a bit past Louis' house
I ran into him and Heidi on one of the landings. they were also in
swimwear and were returning from this swimming place where I was going;
they were about to go in and get some sleep. I told them where I was
going and why and Louis told me, "everyone was there." I found this
disappointing as I was hoping for solitude and study - I was behind after
all.

Heidi went on and Louis and I hung out and talked. after a while we began
to attract these butterflies that looked like small monarchs; they kept
landing on us. they covered my soda can, which was blue, and some got
stuck inside under like a bubble of soda pop. Louis showed me a trick
that made them gather in the air, from one's hands, in a sheeted pattern.
this also got them out of the soda can so they didn't die.

I also had some unpleasant problems with flies. for some reason they
kept getting into the top part the robe I was wearing over the bathing
suit and I had to shoo them to prevent them getting stuck in my boobs.
yuck.

I went down to the place and there was "everybody". by this is meant
the geeks etc who were into this reasonably well-off scene. I can't
really enumerate who-all was there because that wasn't important to the
dream - so I don't really remember - but it was pretty much the set of
geeks I am most likely to run into during non-geek-driven social events
that I attend. I socialized, had conversations, hung out, etc, and of
course did not get any studying done. I began to fret over this because
I was getting too tired to handle the upcoming day.

{it's important to note there's been no time jump. this started at 4am,
sunshine and all. the folks I am talking to though are all enjoying
the sun in bathing suits etc and are all totally comfortable with
themselves around each other. even in my dream I am marvelling at these
two facts.}

at about 8am I started to walk back and was with a friend, a female whose
identity was also apparently not important to the dream. partway back,
the realization hit me: Louis must be sleeping with Heidi. my friend
told me I was ridiculous; of course that was not happening. after some
discussion we decided to stop at his house so we could see if it was true.

because of the hour, Louis' housemate was already up and getting ready
for work. he was happy to see us and we chatted for a while. Louis
and he were trying to get a loan to remodel their house, which was
out of fashion, or maybe behind, for the neighbourhood. he had to sign
some paperwork to finalize the loan, and was offended that under his
signature he had to fill in a box with a self-estimation of his credit
rating - and justify it. I told him this was normal - rummaged a little
in a sideboard, and showed him Louis' completed paperwork, with all that
completed. {what's neat about this is that I was reading in the dream.}

somehow we let slip that we were actually there to try to find out if
Heidi <was | had been> there that night. no, no; of course not, what made
us think that. just as I was starting to explain - in an attempt to
mitigate the embarassment - Louis came out to the front rooms, drying his
hair. he also told me of course not, and pointed out that I always
think that.

then I either woke up or the dream segued into this poorly-remembered
sequence about a gas station and an old car.
