The Guild of Saint Cuthbert's boasts a membership of approximately 300-350. Approximately 175 of us are active during any given fair in which the Guild participates -- the number varies according to the location and time of year of the fair.
Although some may take the term "member" to imply membership in a society or some similar circumstance, that is not the case. Cuthbert's is an active performing Guild in historical recreational fairs, and the term is more meant along the lines of "cast member". Because the bulk of a parade of Renaissance revelers consists of a bunch of peasants walking down the street, the Guild generally welcomes all who wish to join. To join St Cuthbert's, contact the Guildmistress, Sue Honor, at least a month prior to the first fair in which you plan to participate as a Guild member. She will instruct you as to the requirements of that particular fair and how they may or may not apply to your personal situation. The Guild of Saint Cuthbert's does not require new members to audition in order to join. The basic requirement is that one must be able to walk and sing simultaneously. Active members in the Guild are required to take part in at least four (4) Guild activities each day of the fair in which they are active. At least one of those activities must be a parade unless physical disability is demonstrated. Failure to participate can have consequences ranging from getting passed over during Advancement of the Ranks, to getting kicked out of the Guild; not to mention generating the resentment and emnity of other Guild members. Very few of the Guild members are paid. The members that are selected for pay are those that demonstrate destitution, or whose Guild-based workload is far and above what can be considered average. The Guild does, however, provide 3 meals a day during each fair in which we maintain an environmental area. Active Guild members are also covered by worker's compensation insurance for any injuries sustained while carrying out or participating in Guild duties. Because of the nature and location of many of the California fairs, a significant number of Guild members are active online. To learn more about these, see how the Guild of St Cuthbert is Parading across the Internet. |
