In 1997, shortly after my mother passed away, I discovered that my parents had been in possession of a photo album belonging to my father's parents, Virgil & Millie Brooks. Perusal of this photo album revealed that roughly the first half of the album were pictures Virgil had taken during his tour of duty on the USS Mallory in the late 19-teens.
The ordering of the photos is a bit odd, but they are all captioned. The quality on most is superb. Some research on my part found out that the captions, which are mostly in quotes, are written by Virgil's wife, Millie, which perhaps explains why they are so descriptive.
I worked on archiving the images on a CD-ROM, but as I progressed towards this goal, I discovered that the images could be compressed enough to make it worthwhile to share with others on the World Wide Web. Thus, as I cleaned up the scans prior to burning the CD, I also made lower-quality JPEGs available on this server.
The image above is a higher-resolution closeup of a photo of the USS Mallory in the harbor at Brest, France. The focus is above average, but it is otherwise typical of the collection.
In 1999, after this website had been up for a while, I was contacted by a gentleman selling 10 postcards with pictures that look like they matched my grandfather's collection. After looking at them, I acquired them, and have now completed a similar setup to my photo album.
